Who we are

Adams Horse and Pet Supplies is a woman-owned business, run by a staff of local Maine riders and pet lovers who want nothing more than to bring high quality products and pet foods to our customers here and across the US and Canada.  We don’t have stockholders, investors or a board of directors, just a small group of hardworking people dedicated to bringing only the best quality products to market.  We test and use everything we sell so we can educate our customers and help them choose the products that are right for them and their pets.  When you call us we’ll answer, and not from a call center.  We are right here in our retail store where we can compare products, take measurements and answer any questions you may have.  We are a small town business with small town values and we can’t wait to make you part of our family!

How we started

Merance Adams became interested in Holistic Pet Foods in the mid 90’s after losing several young pets to cancer. After researching pet food companies and common ingredients, she realized that many commercial diets were low in nutrition, high in chemicals, and were actually harming our pets.  She wanted to increase the public’s knowledge of pet nutrition and offer healthier alternatives to make it easy for pet owners to properly care for their pets.  In 1998 while living in Florida where her husband, Jim, was stationed with the Navy, she started Adams Pet Supplies as an online holistic pet food retailer.  The online store was a success, proving the need for a convenient source of high quality pet products.  There were even a few well-known celebrities ordering!  In 2000 the Adams moved to Maine and while Merance loved the natural beauty and small, remote towns, she found that there were very few places to buy quality equipment and supplies for her horses. Merance had been an avid equestrian her whole life - fox hunting as a child, saddle training young Thoroughbreds at a breeding farm in her late teens and early 20's, and then doing low level eventing and dressage as an adult. The local tack shops were small and catered to the western riders. She ordered products from a big name tack shop and was disappointed in the service. She decided she could do better and started offering horse supplies on the Adams website. The response was fantastic.  In a few short years, Adams moved from the basement of her home, outgrew two more retail spaces and is now threatening to outgrow its current 10,000 square foot retail store! Through all of the growth and change, Adams has remained a privately owned, woman run business employing an all-local staff of dedicated, passionate animal lovers who show up every day to serve our awesome customers!

Giving back

The internet pet market has grown exponentially since Adams was first established and many retailers have come and gone, but we’re still here, offering a wide selection of the best products with the personal service you will only receive from a small town retailer.

Adams believes in giving back to the local community and worthy organizations across the country.  We have supported our local pony clubs and riding organizations by loaning our Burlingham Jump course, providing gift certificates and prizes for shows and raffle items for fund raisers.  We have sponsored the USEA Area 1 Young Rider Team and several of the Maine teams travelling to Lendon Gray’s Youth Dressage Festival.  We donate raffle prizes and pet food to our local animal shelters, send horse blankets to local rescues every fall, and provide generous discounts to animal rescues and placement programs including CANTER.

Merance Adams is personally active in a local rescue group that pulls dogs from high-kill shelters in the South and transports them to Northern rescues and shelters where they have a much better chance of adoption. Merance fosters the dogs in her home for two weeks helping them gain valuable life skills to facilitate their adoption. These dogs frequently come to her thin, sick and frightened. It is amazing what high quality holistic food and love will do to turn these dogs around. This year alone, Merance has fostered over 15 dogs that have gone on to find great homes.
