The Korsteel European Elevator bit (sometimes called a continental gag) gives the rider the choice of several rein positions allowing the bit to be used as a basic hanging cheek snaffle or to lift the head for stronger correction. This bit is popular among jumper riders who may need to quickly adjust and rebalance their horse. While the bit can be ridden with one rein, it is only recommended to do so on the large main ring as riding with one rein on the lower rings will not give the horse a break from the gag action. Ridden with two reins, this bit allows the rider to use the bit as a hanging cheek snaffle when the horse is working properly and then gives them the ability to engage the gag action with the second rein when more control is needed.
