Mattes Contour Pads have sheepskin panels under the saddle for protection, while the "bare," or unlined flaps minimize bulk under the rider's leg. The anatomically correct topline design of Mattes Sheepskin Pads follows the contours of the horse's back and allows for a perfect fit under the saddle.

The patented SPINE FREE Design ensures the spine is not in contact with any seams, fabric, or tension which eliminates the risk of rubs and pressure on the sensitive area of the back around the spine. Sheepskin has long been known for its amazing natural properties including heat dissemination, breathability, and the ability to eliminate friction and bounce. This cannot be imitated by wool pile, artificial fiber product, or foam.

The secure SADDLE-FIX^®system allows the top seam of the saddle pad to be attached comfortably in the gullet of the saddle.

The core of the saddle pad is made of two layers: POLY-FLEX^®(a deep-needled polyester felt) is used to maintain the shape and spread the pressure, while polyester wadding provides padding. We completely avoid foam, neoprene or gel, making the whole pad breathable.

Mattes sheepskin should be dried thoroughly after each ride or at the end of each day. Let it air dry overnight, upside down and brush the wool with a stiff brush to loosen up and remove dirt and hair. The Mattes special detergent, MELP, is highly concentrated and designed for sheepskin products. Regular detergents can easily harden the leather and can render the wool brittle or matted. Machine washable on gentle cycle in cold water. Air fluff in dryer with no heat. Do not dry completely, while still damp gently pull into shape. Lay flat to finish drying. Do not expose to sun or dry on a radiator. Do not use chlorine bleach.
